Around The Nation In A Few Paragraphs

Commitments are flying around and more are expected. For instance, we'll learn about Curtis Sumpter later in the week and possibly another high-profile PG could be on the verge. Here's some of the latest buzz from the world of college basketball recruiting.

Wednesday's Recruiting Chatter

We continue to hear reports that Virginia Beach (VA) Salem PG John Gilchrist could be ready to pull the trigger and pick a school. Should that happen, insiders say that NC State would be the school he chooses. Gilchrist took a visit to Raleigh on Tuesday and word is that the trip went extremely well. Considered one of the top pure PGs in the class, he would be a huge addition for the Pack who could use his leadership at the point. There's still a chance he could take an unofficial visit to Georgetown, but our sources wouldn't be surprised if he were to decide before that.

OK PF Shelden Williams is going to visit Duke in August and then Illinois in September when the Illini take on Louisville in football. However, this situation is reminiscent of the Chris Duhon recruitment two years ago. If you remember, Duhon first visited Duke and was supposed to follow the visit up with a trip to Kentucky. Needless to say, Duhon never got to Lexington. The chatter surrounding the July camps was that Duke was Williams' leader and could get an early commitment.

Williams says he's like to decide in the fall but that's not set in stone. "Right now I'm still keeping an open mind. Anything can happen." Yes, it can. Just ask Duhon.

Last year, Minnesota landed its top target when Rick Rickert switched allegiances and opted to stay home and play for the Gophers. This year, Minnesota is chasing PG Bryan Hopkins, CG Ashanti Cook, PF Charles Bass, PG CJ Watson and PF Alou Kane among others.

NY forward Curtis Sumpter is set to pop. Sumpter will reportedly announce his college choice Saturday night on "The Mike Quick Show," on the MSG network. A number of New Yorkers have used this medium by which to announce their collegiate destination the past few years. The chatter is Villanova, but as we've learned this year, certainly anything can happen. We'll know Saturday night.
