"There's a lot of schools that are coming out of nowhere," Russell explained to Scout.com. "It's going good."
North Carolina appears to ramping up their interest in Russell. Roy Willliam is expected to see Russell play for the first time on Friday.
"He called me after the Ohio State game when LaQuinton Ross hit that buzzer beater," Russell said. "So he called me and told me how he was interested. He said he wanted to see me play in person. He said he's heard a lot of good things from his assistants and what not and we just talked from there."
Russell said there's mutual interest with the Tar Heels.
"I definitely like Carolina," Russell said. "They started showing interest at the beginning of the year. Then they fell back a little and then they started showing interest in the middle of the year. Then we've just been keeping in touch since then. But I'm definitely interest in them."
Russell is a Louisville native and followed Louisville's run to a National Championship. He's kept in touch with their coaches and said he talked to Rick Pitino "three or four" weeks ago.
"I talked to coach [Kevin] Keatts not too long ago and then I talked to them after their championship game," Russell said.
Russell also mentioned Kentucky. He said they have picked up their interest in him lately and they discussed getting him on campus when he goes home for the summer.
Originally, Russell wanted to play his college ball close to home. Now, it's not as much of a factor.
"I guess with me growing up a little, I don't really care anymore," Russell said. "Last year I probably wanted to stay close to home because I was home sick, but now it doesn't mean as much to me anymore."
LSU is Russell's most recent offer. Russell hadn't talked to them much prior to the offer. He's been keeping in touch with them since.
"They came up here to watch us practice," he said about the Tigers. "I haven't really watched LSU, but I've been keeping in contact with them since that day. I'm definitely interested in them too."
Russell isn't in a rush with the recruiting process. He may cut down his list this summer, but has yet to come up with a timetable for a college decision.
"I've talked to my dad," he said. "I want to cut my list to seven or eight in the summer time. I'm going to think about it, but he doesn't want me to move too fast. That's just something I was thinking about doing."
Russell will play with Each 1 Teach 1 on the spring and summer circuit.
