Four showing Owens most attention

Baltimore native Tariq Owens is one of the more versatile forwards in the class of 2014.

One of the class of 2014 prospects that played the best over the weekend at the Pitt Hoop Group Jam Fest was Tariq Owens. The Baltimore (Md) St. Vincent Pallotti power forward showed off his impressive length and athleticism while leading his team to a strong showing.

At 6-foot-9 with very long arms and high level athleticism, Owens has a lot of physical tools to work with. During the high school year he was impressive on the defensive end, and he continued that during the start of the AAU season.

"It was a pretty good year," said Owens. "We ended up winning a conference championship. It started off good and then in the middle of the season it got rough. We had a losing streak, but we came back and won a championship."

For Owens he says his goal for the spring is very simple.

"I just want to show people I can play and earn more scholarships," said Owens.

In terms of recruiting, four schools remain at the top in terms of showing attention for the three-star forward.

"VCU, Temple, Miami, and Georgetown are my main schools right now," said Owens.

Already Owens has made one visit to Temple, and says he wants to make a return trip to the school.

"I went up there before and I liked the atmosphere, and I want to see the campus more," said Owens of the Owls.

When it comes to VCU, Owens says their style of play appeals to him.

"I feel their tempo really fits me," Owens explained. "They like long and athletic players and that is what I am."

The Miami Hurricanes have also been showing a lot of attention to Owens, and the hope is for him to get down to South Beach for an official visit.

"They tell me they really like me and that they want to get me on campus for my official visit," said Owens.

For now there is timeframe for a decision, but Owens does hope to make some official visits before making a commitment.
