Matthews visits UW, set to take others

Charles Matthews saw a Big Ten school this past weekend and is now planning to visit a handful of programs over the next few months.

Prior to this past weekend Charles Matthews hadn't taken a college visit since his freshman year. Now he's set to embark on a host of unofficial visits.

Matthews, a 6-foot-4 combination guard, visited Wisconsin this past weekend with Diamond Stone and Kevon Looney.

"It went really well," Matthews said. "I got a chance to meet the whole coaching staff and watch how they get after it in practice and just see the campus."

"They have good coaching there," he added. "I do like that. They play together. It's a very unselfish team down there as well."

Matthews' next visit to Michigan State this coming weekend.

"I like how hard they play," Matthews said. "They have great coaching there with Coach [Tom] Izzo and staff. They are really good. They have a winning tradition."

Matthews is also planning a handful of other unofficial visits this fall.

"I know I'm going to Kansas for Late Night," Matthews said. "I'm going to Kentucky September 9th for a game they have going on. I'm probably going to Marquette September 8th and I think Memphis sometime in October."

To go with the schools he's planning visits to, Matthews also has offers from Illinois, Arizona and Ohio State. Stanford and Duke are also recruiting him.

Despite not offering, Matthews said the Blue Devils have turned up their attention on him.

"They are recruiting me hard," Matthews said. "They just haven't offered yet. They really keep in touch with me. They are basically trying to build a relationship with me right now."

Kentucky offered prior to July and has been recruiting Matthews hard. He said the draw with the Wildcats is the NBA.

"They are simply telling me they like my game a lot," Matthews said. "They are telling me that I can come in and be a really good addition to the team and they can help me achieve my dreams."

"As soon as you think of Kentucky, you think of NBA," he added. "I really like that. They go hard. Everything there is earned. Nothing is given to you. I like that a lot."

Matthews' current plan is to go through the recruiting process for the next year and make his college choice on his 18th birthday, which is November 15th.

"I've thought about it already," Matthews said. "Me and my mom and dad have. I'm actually planning on committing on my birthday next year right before the school season starts. So it'll be my 18th birthday next year."
