Richmond commits to Houston

JaQuel Richmond, a three-star lead guard out of North Carolina, committed to Houston on Monday.

Houston picked up a commitment from 2014 point guard JaQuel Richmond on Monday.

A standout at Greensboro (N.C.) Wesleyan Christian, Richmond committed to Houston over interest from Creighton and Texas A&M.

Richmond said his relationships with head coach James Dickey and assistant Ronnie Hamilton played a big role in decision to go with the Cougars.

"They call me everyday," Richmond told "They basically built a relationship with me over time. They showed me they really wanted me to be at their college."

Richmond, a 6-foot point guard, said there's an opportunity to get a significant amount of playing time early.

"You don't want to go to a college and sit on the bench or not get reps," Richmond said. "I can go in and start. It's a relief at the same time I still have to work for my spot."
