Wilkins commits to UVa on visit

Isaiah Wilkins, a 6-foot-7 power forward out of Atlanta, verbally committed to Virginia on Saturday.

Heading into Isaiah Wilkins' official visit at Virginia this weekend, the Cavaliers were the presumed favorite. But Wilkins wasn't planning on committing while on campus. That plan changed on Sunday.

Wilkins, a 6-foot-7 power forward out of Atlanta (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian, committed to Tony Bennett just before leaving town.

"I wasn't actually planning on committing once I got here," Wilkins said. "It was great. I met with the coaches, the strength coach, the academic director and saw the facilities. I hung out with the players and I just felt like it was home for me."

Wilkins had visits set up to Miami and SMU, but he opted to cancel both. Wilkins said UVa guard Malcolm Brogdon, who was a high school teammate, factored into his decision-making.

"Malcolm Brogdon came from the same high school I did," he said. "He was my host. We talked a lot. He didn't pressure me to commit. He just told me about the school and coach Bennett and how he challenges you."

"It helped a lot," he added. "When they started recruiting me he texted me and said if I have any questions to hit him up and he'll shoot me straight. Malcolm was highly recruited and it helped to talk to him."

Wilkins said the facilities and atmosphere at Virginia also stood out on the visit.

"The atmosphere is crazy," Wilkins said. "When I first got there he sat us down and we got to watch their highlight videos from last year. It was crazy. Their practice gym is nice. The strength and conditioning is nice. The home court was nice."

Wilkins is Virginia's second pledge of the 2014 class. He joins four-star wing B.J. Stith to make up their current recruiting class.
