Around the Nation: 9/16

In this space we discuss the latest behind the scenes changes to the database, based on stories we publish on the national site as well as stories from network team sites, social media rumblings and other internet tidbits.

1. Stanley Johnson has cut his list of suitors to a quintet. Those remaining include Arizona, USC, Kentucky, Florida and Oregon. Kansas and UCLA — neither of which had appeared to be a frontrunner — no longer are under consideration. Johnson still has several potential visits remaining and may wait until spring to make his decision.

2. Staying out west, Thomas Welsh's recruitment is beginning to coalesce. The big man visited California this past weekend and has two more trips upcoming to Pac-12 programs.

According to, Welsh will visit UCLA next weekend and follow that with a trip to Colorado two weeks later. Unlike Johnson and other West Coasters who don't appear to be as provincial, Welsh's recruitment has taken on a decided western tint.

The Pac-12 is attempting to mount a comeback, and getting a talented, multi-year big man would be huge for both the school that lands him and the conference as a whole.
