Announcement Primer: Isaiah Whitehead

Five-star Isaiah Whitehead is set to make his college announcement and here is a look back at his recruitment as well as picks as to where he will end up.

The Recruitment

This is a situation where everybody in the hoops recruiting world knew who Isaiah Whitehead was before he ever played a high school game. They hype started building in New York City before he ever got to high school, and Whitehead proved the excitement to be justified with his play.

With that schools such as St. John's, Syracuse, Seton Hall, Kansas, Rutgers, UCLA, Kentucky, Arizona, and North Carolina all showed early interest in Whitehead.

Both publically and privately it was made clear that Syracuse was the so called "dream school" and that they led. For roughly two years Whitehead told most everybody that would listen that Syracuse was his leader, and that they would be tough to beat at the end.

However things changed this fall when the Orange snagged a commitment from Kaleb Joseph and that seemed to take them out of the mix with Whitehead. From there Indiana got involved and for a short while had a lot of momentum, and then it was Minnesota, and finally Pittsburgh.

All the while during this Whitehead maintained he was open and seemed content to go through the recruiting process. In fact it looked like he wanted to get away from the city of New York, but then abruptly that changed during the week.

Whitehead announced that he would make his commitment without ever taking an official visit and speculation ran ramped that he would stay close to home with the choice being St. John's or Seton Hall.

The Talent

After always showing big time talent as a sophomore and junior, things all came together for Whitehead this spring and summer. He went from a legit top 50 talent to a big time elite prospect. The difference for Whitehead was simple, he became a big time shooter.

Always a high level scorer who could get into the lane with the best of them, Whitehead became a knockdown guy from deep. With that outside shot working, his strength, athleticism, and slashing ability was even more difficult to stop, and he was a literally a one man wrecking crew all summer long.

Whitehead shined at all of the big events and proved himself to be the top scorer in the country from the perimeter. Also his strength and size give him great versatility on the defense end, and he is one of the more complete guards in the country.

The Predicition

Brian Snow: Up until roughly midnight on Wednesday night I was completely convinced that Whitehead would end up at St. John's. Not only did St. John's get the last shot with an unofficial visit, but also multiple sources indicated that he would go there. However a buzz started brewing that Seton Hall was far stronger than most were giving credit. In fact one well-placed source was very adamant it would be the Pirates and not the Red Storm. Still I am sticking with my gut here and saying he will stay in the Big Apple. Prediction: St. John's

Evan Daniels: Although there are five schools involved, I really think it's a two horse race coming into the last day. St. John's and Seton Hall are the two schools vying for positioning with Whitehead. There's a lot of rumors swirling behind the scenes. He visited St. John's Tuesday afternoon, but Seton Hall seems to be gaining steam late in the process. While neither school would surprise me, I'm going with Seton Hall for my prediction. Prediction: Seton Hall
