Coaches take chance on McSpadden

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Nike Team Florida workout event brought its fair share of talented wings to the Eckerd College hardwood, and Chance McSpadden was among the best in attendance.

A 6-3 junior SG at Winter Haven (Fla.) High, Chance McSpadden is a skilled handler and passer who at times has been an impressive jump shooter as well. He didn't knock down shots consistently at this event, but his body of work has attracted numerous major coaches.

He became embroiled in some controversy within the past few days, as reports surfaced that he had committed to Central Florida.

"I thought I was going to commit, but it wasn't a true commitment," McSpadden said. "There was just a miscommunication and I'm actually open to any college now."

His list of suitors is impressive. Along with the Knights, he claims to have drawn offers from South Florida, Florida, Clemson and Tennessee, with South Carolina also involved.

Now that he has had one brush with a college decision — and its ensuing controversy — McSpadden won't rush into a final choice.

"I know I'm not going to do it early now," he said. "I'll probably commit at the end of AAU season (2014) and maybe take some visits. I view myself as a combo (guard) and am looking to play that role."
