Clayton making his move

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — From Golden to Sunshine, that's the route Derrick Clayton has traveled as he attempts to win major scholarship offers in the coming months.

Derrick Clayton already has covered a lot of territory in his hoops career. The 6-5 SG is a Bay area native who previously competed for the Oakland Rebels. Now, the slender senior wing has relocated to Florida's Elev8te (not a typo) Academy to undertake his senior campaign.

Clayton was arguably the best shooter at this past weekend's Workout. He boasts a quick release in addition to his impressive accuracy, and he's also a reasonably quick athlete.

That said, a player of his talent typically would have drawn more college attention than he presently holds. Clearly, late high school changes can tear academics asunder as well as create out-of-sight, out-of-mind issues, but Clayton is working to solidify his presence on the regional and even national stage.

"I've got offers from Utah State, USF (San Francisco), UC-Davis, San Jose State and UTEP," he said. "Penn State is also talking to me, and I think they might offer soon."

And while on the one hand acknowledging the importance of basketball, he insists that academics will play a role in his decision.

"My plan is to go to college all four years and get a degree," he said. "So graduation rate will be very important."

Clayton added that he doesn't have a timetable for the process or his ultimate decision.
