All-Frosh/Soph Camp Recap

The Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp provided a look at several of the West Coast's top underclassmen. Here's a rundown of who stood out from the event.

Chris Seeley, SF/SG: A sophomore wing with good size at about 6-foot-6 - he's grown about four inches in the past year - Seeley is a nice prospect. He has the size, frame and length for the position, also playing with a purpose, constantly hunting for offensive rebounds and racking up points on putbacks. Seeley did most of his work around the basket and finished well, with or without contact.

Eric Monroe, PG: Monroe isn't going to blow you away as an athlete but what he does possess is a very strong basketball IQ and is a terrific passer who plays the right way. He did a very good job creating for teammates this weekend. He's going to have to keep improving as a shooter while gaining strength will allow him to make plays on the court that he's not physically able to do yet.

Javonntie Jackson, SG: This is a young shooting guard with a lot of upside. He was drilling three-pointers this weekend, while he's also a very good athlete and had some explosive finishes. Jackson has nice size at about 6-foot-5, good body control, finished very well and defended. He'll need to add to his scoring repertoire

Chris Barnes, SG: Barnes has good enough size and frame and he's proving himself as one of the top slashers in the SoCal area. Almost every time that Barnes gets the ball, he's quickly putting it on the ground and making his way to the basket. Barnes has a floater but it's seldom you see him take an outside shot. Barnes does have explosive athleticism - he threw down a ridiculous one-hand dunk on an opponent on Sunday - and will drop an impressive assist off the drive every now and then.

Dikymbe Martin, PG: A small point guard, Martin makes up for his size with a strong basketball IQ and high skill level. His best weapon offensively is his floater, but he's also a threat to pull-up from midrange, does a nice job creating for teammates and although he's not big or a great athlete, he is a pesky defender with very good anticipation on that end. He'll need to gain confidence with his outside shot, but he's a talented young player.

Lonzo Ball, PG: At about 6-foot-5 with very long arms, Ball also has the size and length to go with a very unique game, but he also has some skills that are really advanced for his age. He's an exceptional cross-court passer that almost abuses the lack of transition defense in camp ball, because if he has the ball in the backcourt and he sees an opening on the other end, he's going to exploit it. He's also a very strong shooter and is a threat to hit from up to NBA distance off the catch and pull. While Ball has a floater, most of his scoring either comes from beyond the arc or slashing in transition. He's one of the top prospects in 2016, although where exactly he stands next to his peers towards the head of the class will have to be determined when he goes up against them head to head.

Jonah Mathews, SG: Just a sophomore shooting guard, Mathews already possesses a big plus skill in his pull-up jumper, a shot he makes at a very high percentage for a player his age. Mathews will pull-up and drill that thing several times a game but he also has a floater/runner, can get to the basket and is improving from distance. He's one of the most promising shooting guards out west in 2016.

Brandon Cyrus, SG: This kid is making a serious run to be considered the top shooting guard prospect out west in 2016 and you get the feeling it's a competition he's going to be in until the end considering just how much he brings to the court. Cyrus has good size at about 6-foot-4, a terrific frame and a very high - but continuously expanding - skill level. Cyrus' athleticism has kicked up a notch and it's helped him when attacking the basket, but he's also improved his three-point shot - especially off the catch - and can pull-up and hit from midrange. Defensively, his size, length, athleticism, feel and motor make him tough to get by, while he uses his handle and basketball IQ to make his teammates better. There is every reason to be excited about Cyrus' future.

Martin Tombe, C/PF: It's way too early to make a call on Tombe's ultimate level because he's so physically immature; he's about 6-foot-6 with very long arms and just has the frame and look of a kid that screams he's not done growing. That said, I love Tombe's approach to the game and while what level of prospect he is remains to be seen, it's clear he's a good player with an evolving skill level. Tombe has a big body with soft hands, plays extremely hard, is involved with every play, rebounds well - he's always around the ball - has nice ball skills for a young post and can step out to shoot from both midrange and three.

Donovan Mitchell, PF: A young forward at about 6-foot-7 who has grown several inches in the last year and doesn't look like he's done yet, Mitchell has a lot of natural talent and how good he ends up being will be dictated by how tall he ultimately gets and how he expands on his skill level. His passing is terrific for a young player at his position, and he's also very strong on the defensive glass, where he'll often grab boards and then lead the break. He's capable of shooting it, but needs to keep working on his jumper from both midrange and three, also improving his handle and getting stronger at the same time. Also a high level volleyball prospect, Mitchell has split time with both sports, so from an experience standpoint he's behind some of his peers, but his upside remains very high if he opts to concentrate on basketball.

Lucas Siewert, PF: Siewert used this camp to prove himself as one of the top young posts in Southern California in 2016 at this stage. He's already pretty tall at about 6-foot-8, but he also has a good build and a high motor. Maybe his biggest plus skill is his rebounding ability, especially on defense; it's always a good sign when a young post is so committed to the glass. Siewert also is very comfortable facing up, as he can shoot it from both midrange and three off the catch. Let's see how he keeps adding to his skill level and how he develops physically, but he's certainly a sophomore to keep an eye on.

Bryson Williams, PF: Williams is a growing post at about 6-foot-6 who you hope can keep getting taller. He has wide shoulders, huge hands and long arms, making him a presence in the paint. Those attributes make Williams an impressive shot blocker for a kid his age and he also seemed to have pretty good touch around the basket. Williams rebounded well on defense, showed good body control on some reverse lay-ups, stepped out and hit some shots from three.

Tim Harrison, PF: This kid was one of the breakout players of the camp and is a prospect who has a lot of potential. Harrison is a face-up four who is very comfortable with his jumper, which he's best at shooting off the catch but is also a threat to pull-up and hit shots from midrange and three. He's about 6-foot-7 and extremely springy; he gets off the court in a hurry and jumps high, which helps him finishing and on the glass, as he's a very good shot blocker and rebounds well. Harrison has to keep working on his handle and expanding every part of his skill level and also gaining strength, but he plays the right way and very hard and is one of the top prospects at his position out west in 2016 right now.

Zach Collins, C: Collins is a young post with a thick frame who isn't a finished product but plays hard and shows a lot of what he's capable of if his skill level keeps coming along. He can finish with both hands and attempts hook shots with both hands as well. Collins also is capable of stepping and shooting out to three. Let's see how his skill level evolves in the months and years to come.

T.J. Leaf, PF: Leaf is one of the top forwards in 2016 nationally and certainly an extremely productive player at this point. Leaf is very efficient and when he gets the ball deep in the paint, he finishes at a high level. The sophomore plays very hard and scores a lot of points in transition due to his motor, size, length and touch. Leaf is also a very good rebounder and gets his share of points off the offensive glass. On defense, Leaf blocks shots and secures defensive rebounds. Leaf is a threat to step out and shoot but he often does his best work inside.

Johnny McWilliams, SG: A promising sophomore shooting guard, McWilliams has pretty good size at about 6-foot-4 and shows flashes of the player he's capable of becoming. McWilliams would often settle for three-pointers but he was more efficient around the basket and scored a lot of baskets in transition, also showing a floater and scoring on the offensive glass. McWilliams has an attacking, scoring mentality and it will be interesting to see the development of his skill level over the next couple years.

Keith Fisher, PF: A 6-foot-7 four man, Fisher has a good frame with long arms and I liked his approach to the game. Fisher played very hard and even though he showed he could hit from midrange, he did the majority of his work in the inside, which you see increasingly less from young big men. Fisher's size, motor and anticipation made him one of the camp's top rebounders, and the majority of points I saw him score were following offensive rebounds. On defense, he blocked shots and grabbed rebounds. He'll need to keep adding to his skill level, but he gave reason to be optimistic about his future.

Ethan Thompson, SG: One of the top West Coast prospects in his class, Thompson has an ideal frame for a young wing with a savvy that's well beyond his years. He already has a pull-up midrange jumper, a floater, can hit from three, has very good anticipation and focus on defense, rebounds well on both sides of the court and always plays hard. Having a father who was a successful player and is now a coach - Stephen Thompson, Sr. - and seeing where Ethan is at this stage, it's just hard to imagine him losing his status as a very good prospect anytime soon.

Jaylen Harris, PG: This is a young point guard with the chance to be a very good player. Harris is very advanced for his age and is tall enough at about 5-foot-11, with a thick, strong build. The lefty sees the court well and made some nice passes this weekend, but scoring is his specialty and he's a threat to hit from three - both off the catch and pull - can pull-up to hit from midrange or get to the basket. A very good player and prospect for a freshman, let's see how Harris expands his game from here.

Charles O'Bannon, Jr., SG: A good athlete who has the size at about 6-foot-4 and length to be a high level wing if he keeps developing, O'Bannon has a nice approach to the game. O'Bannon has a lot of confidence in his three-point shot - he hit from distance at a pretty high percentage - and also scored off his runner and around the basket. He uses his size and length on defense to stay in front of his defender and pick up steals.

Billy Preston, PF: There's no question that Preston is one of the more advanced players I've seen so far in 2017 and one of the top prospects in his class out west right now. A face up forward with good size and a nice frame, Preston's specialty is his jump shot, and even though he can hit it off the catch, he's also a big threat to pull-up from both midrange and three and knock down jumpers. Preston is also a strong offensive rebounder and scores a lot of points on putbacks, while he also does a nice job on the defensive glass. Now, even though Preston is very talented for his age, he can really take his game to the next level by using his size and build to become an even bigger force in the paint by adding to his footwork and skill level inside. Regardless, he's clearly a very good prospect at this stage.

* A speedy 2016 point guard, Alize Travis uses his quickness to get by his defender and has a motor that helps him make a lot of effort type plays like blocked shots, steals and rebounds.

* Shaquille Dawkins is very small at about 5-foot-7 but he's also exceptionally quick and is a blur getting to the basket. He did a nice job of getting to the basket and finding open teammates.

* Ryan Murphy is a 2016 shooting guard who is a threat as a shooter. He hit several shots this weekend, off the catch and pull, from both midrange and three.

* A 2017 guard who plays hard, Christian Popoola, Jr. seems to be most comfortable from midrange right now, and he's a good defender who played with good energy.

* I didn't watch enough of 2016 small forward Chase Nomaaea but he's a tall wing at 6-foot-6 with a good build. He used his handle and body control to score several points on cuts to the hoop.

* Milan Aquaah is a very strong and tough sophomore point guard who also plays football. The 2016 prospect is tough to stop when he wants to get to the basket.

* Las Vegas Clark has a freshman forward in Deshawn Wilson with nice size that did a good job scoring in transition and scoring on putbacks.
