Miners win out for Griffin

Though diminutive at only 5-9, the New Orleans Elite point guard got the offer he wanted, mulled his decision and issued a commitment.

Tyree Griffin removed himself from the recruiting board on Monday evening. The sparkplug floor general delivered a pledge to UTEP, which was impressed by his summer play and decided that might exceeds height.

Griffin confirmed his decision on Twitter and added, "#MinerStrong!!" to illustrate his excitement. Griffin didn't register as a widely regarded high-major point guard prospect, but he played his best ball of the year during the summer and certainly earned the scholarship offer.

Tim Floyd and the Miner program certainly took their lumps at the outset of the upcoming season, when prized 2013 signee Isaac Hamilton backed out of a letter of intent. And while Griffin doesn't project as that kind of talent, he at least will help shore up a position of need for the next four seasons.
