Payton II continues legacy at OSU

Gary Payton II almost definitely will not achieve his father's success in basketball. No son could be expected to match such an illustrious career.

But father and son do have something in common: They're both Beavers.

According to Brad Winton of, Payton II chose Oregon State on Thursday over St. Mary's and others. The 6-3 shooting guard at Salt Lake (Utah) Community College doesn't possess a huge reputation but has produced at a solid clip in junior college.

Make no mistake: Taking a legacy recruit has its advantages, and Payton II obviously benefits from his last name as well as his father's success at OSU.

That said, he reputedly is a tough defender (not too surprising) and good rebounder from the wing. The Beavers need a talent influx to compete more evenly within the Pac-12, and this week's class also includes developing center Isaiah Manderson along with guard Chai Baker.
