The RecruitmentIt's been an interesting recruitment for Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones. But it all comes to a close today at 4:00 ET when Okafor and Jones announce at their respective schools on ESPN's Signing Week special.
Coming out of July, Okafor and Jones each had half a dozen schools on their list. They dabbled with a few schools individually, but as their recruitments heated up in the early fall, they began to get serious about being a package deal and three schools – Baylor, Duke and Kansas – were under consideration.
The duo took official visits to the three schools together. They visited Baylor the weekend of August 30th. Then they took an official to Kansas the weekend of October 18th and Duke the next weekend – October 25th.
Earlier in the week, Okafor and Jones narrowed their list further, eliminating Baylor from consideration.
The TalentIt's safe to say that this is the best package deal in high school recruiting since Greg Oden and Mike Conley went to Ohio State together. Okafor and Jones are tremendous talents that will likely catapult today's winner into national title conversation next year.
Okafor, who stands 6-foot-10 and checks in at 255-pounds, is Scout.com's No.1 overall player, is the most physically imposing and dominant post player in high school basketball.
Okafor is advanced offensively and is probably the best high school post scorer since DeMarcus Cousins. Okafor has a great set of hands, tremendous touch and a variety of moves on the block. He's also able to step away from the rim and make mid-range shots.
While Okafor dominates the paint, Jones controls the game. A 6-foot-1 guard, Jones has a terrific comprehension of his position. He controls the pace of the game, has very good vision and runs his team as well as any guard in the 2014 class.
On top of all that, if you need Jones to score, he certainly can do that as well. He's developed a consistent long-range shot and is more than comfortable making shots off the bounce from mid-range.
Whichever school lands Okafor and Jones today, we'll immediately move to the No. 1 spot in the 2014 class rankings.
PredictionsEvan Daniels: This one has been close. I think for quite some time it's been a race between Duke and Kansas, despite Baylor making a pretty good run at them. Weekly the rumblings changed from Duke and Kansas. The day of the big announcement, signs appear to be pointing towards Durham. I think it's where Jones has always wanted to go, he just needed to talk the big fella into heading there with him. Prediction: Duke
Brian Snow: I will admit for a lot of their recruitment I have been quite skeptical that Jones and Okafor would end up at the same school. However they stood firm, and it is looking like they will indeed attend school together. One thing that has never been in doubt is that Jones is going to Duke. Because of that it sounds like the Blue Devils are having one heck of a day. Okafor has also seemingly decided that is the place for him, and Mike Krzyzewski will have a lot to smile about. Prediction: Duke
