Two Get First Shot At Wilson

Texan Kyle Wilson, a combo forward, has two visits set up and four more schools on hold. He's set to hit the road later this month. Wilson routinely drew some top-notch head coaches to his games in July and now he's narrowing his focus.

Notre Dame, Illinois Get First Crack

Mike Montgomery, Mike Brey and Bill Self were in the gym. So was SMU's Mike DeMent, hoping his Mustangs could stay in the ballgame like a few other coaches in the building.

""You kind of get used to it and just focus on what you doing," Plano (TX) Jesuit Prep forward Kyle Wilson said of hooping it up in front of such luminaries.

What the coaches were there to see was a forward who had discovered a new part of his game and they liked it. "I kind of found a different part of my game over the summer.

"I knew just from me shooting in the backyard I could do it. I had never gotten the chance to play outside all my life. I had been the biggest on the team so never got the chance. That's what I wanted to do and see what happens. Rodney Belcher, my AAU coach, just kind of stuck me out there and I liked it so I worked on it."

Oh, it worked all right. While others try to compliment their inside game with an appearance on the perimeter, Wilson legitimately can shoot it to 3-point range.

Notre Dame, Illinois, Xavier, Northwestern, Stanford and Baylor all like him. However, two schools are going to get first crack at him. Wilson will visit Illinois the weekend of Sept. 1 and then piggyback the trip with a jaunt to Notre Dame the weekend of Sept. 8. The plan is to check out both campuses, survey his list and then decide if he needs to take any more visits.

In essence, if he likes either Notre Dame or Illinois or both, he'll likely decide between the two and put a stop to the official visits. However, should he feel the need to take more trips, he would do so.

Wilson On The Schools

Notre Dame. "I used to live in Chicago and I'm Catholic so that's part of it. I've always been a fan of the tradition and I definitely want to take a good look into that."

Illinois: "I've gotten to know Coach Gillespie and Coach Self. You can't get much better than the Big Ten."
