St. Francis is one of the favorites to come home with a state title in their division in the state of Georgia, and Gates feels like their regular season prepared them for the playoffs.
"So far the season has gone pretty good, though we could have played a little bit better," said Gates. "We have some close losses, and I think that has prepared us for the playoffs since we will be tested and used to playing in close games."
In terms of his individual play, Gates said, "I think I have played pretty well, but I think I could have played a little bit better. I think I have shown I can handle the ball well, shoot, and also rebound."
Recruiting wise Gates has had a chance to see numerous schools over the past year.
Gates was able to visit Auburn at the beginning of the year for a football game, and he came away impressed with what he saw.
"I liked the trip to Auburn," explained Gates. "It was for a football game, and I liked the campus. The coaches were real cool, and we watched the team practice for a little bit. Overall it was a good trip."
Also his trip to Alabama was a good one, and he is building a strong relationship with the Crimson Tide coaches.
"I talk to Coach (John) Brannen most of the time and I have a strong relationship," said Gates. "I talk to him often. I saw them practice for a little bit and toured the campus which was nice. I saw a football game which was real good, and I like Alabama a lot."
Gates is hoping to help his team bring home a state title, and then also have a strong showing in the spring on the AAU circuit.
