Matthews picks Kentucky

Charles Matthews announce on Monday he was ready to make his college choice. At a press conference at his high school on Wednesday he announced for the Kentucky Wildcats.

Charles Matthews is headed to Kentucky.

At a press conference at Chicago (Ill.) St. Rita, Matthews announced his pledge to the Wildcats over interest from Illinois, Marquette, Kansas and Michigan State.

"I just felt I had a good gut feeling since the first day I went there," Matthews said.

John Calipari visited Matthews at his school on Monday. Once that news broke most expected a commitment to Kentucky. However, Matthews said that isn't what sealed his commitment.

"Committing wasn't event part of the talk, I just felt that is the place I wanted to be," Matthews added.

"I committed because Dominique [Matthews] told me there wasn't a point to keep waiting, just to get it done," he said.

Matthews visited Kentucky for their Alumni game in mid-September. He also had a strong connection with UK assistant Orlando Antigua, who played for Matthews' high school coach -- Gary DeCesare.

"I just felt comfortable with the coaching staff," Matthews said. "I think I have a good chance to get better and win and hopefully make it to the NBA afterwards."

Matthews is Kentucky's first verbal commitment of the 2015 class. A five-star guard, Matthews is ranked No. 15 overall.
