Handful of schools recruiting Smits

At nearly 7-feet tall, Derrik Smits is an intriguing prospect from the state of Indiana.

For 6-foot-10 center Derrik Smits this is a big spring and summer on the AAU circuit. The Zionsville (Ind) native is finally healthy and is hoping to have a big showing in front of college coaches.

It was a high school season with flashes of impressive play for Smits, and overall he feels the year went okay.

"As a team we started off pretty well, but we didn't finish as well," said Smits. "I think I had an up and down season. I was injured to start the season, and once I got healthy I think things went well."

Recruiting wise a handful of schools are showing Smits significant attention.

"I am hearing from Xavier, Clemson, Gonzaga, and Purdue mostly," said Smits.

Smits has been to Clemson on a pair of occasions and says he has built a very good relationship with the ACC school.

"It was a lot of fun," said Smits of his recent visit to Clemson. "I saw the football crowd before so I was expecting a crazy crowd. It was a lot of fun seeing the basketball game. I have a good relationship with Coach Winiecki. We talk every week or so, and we have a good relationship."

Another school he saw during the year was Xavier. Smits also points out he is hoping to get back there soon.

"I don't talk to them as much, but when I do we talk for a while," said Smits of Xavier. "I am going to go up and visit soon, but right now I don't know of a specific date."

For now Smits is just in the process of gathering information. When it does come time for him to make a decision, Smits knows what he will be looking for in a school.

"I am just looking for how I fit in and also academics," said Smits. "I want to go to a good academic school and also find a good fit with the players and the coaches."

Smits will be running with Grassroots Indiana as a part of the Under Armour circuit this spring.
