Shayok commits to UVa

Marial Shayok, who reopened his recruitment less than two weeks ago, has already settled on his college destination. Shayok will play his college basketball in the ACC.

Marial Shayok is headed to Virginia.

According to a source, Shayok, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Blairstown (N.Y.) Blair Academy, made a pledge to Tony Bennett and his staff Tuesday evening.

Shayok originally signed with Marquette, but received his release from the Golden Eagles on April 11th. Shayok took a visit to Virginia the first time he went through the recruiting process.

Shayok's high coach Joe Mantegna also confirmed the news to Scout.com.

"UVa was Marial's first visit on Labor Day weekend," Mantegna told Scout.com. "Marial's family trusted Tony implicit and his staff was relentless."

A number of schools reached out to Shayok when he opened up his recruitment, including Notre Dame, Rutgers and Indiana.

Virginia assistant Ron Sanchez was the point man on Shayok's recruitment. This is the second player he's reeled in from Blair Academy. Current UVa player Mike Tobey played at Blair Academy as well.

"He did a great job recruiting Tobey and Marial," he said. "We all trust Ron and of course coach Bennett."

Virginia now has four commitments in 2014. Shayok joins B.J. Stith, Isaiah Wilkins and Jack Salt to make up their current recruiting class.

Shayok is regarded as a three-star prospect.
