K.C. Run GMC prevails at Jayhawk

OLATHE, Kan. — The Jayhawk Invitational concluded on Sunday afternoon, with K.C. Run GMC defeating the Illinois Wolves 61-53 in the finale.

The western division of Under Armour's Association brought numerous talented squads to Kansas, but they needn't have looked past the back yard to find a champion.

Led by fast-rising scorer Jimmy Whitt, K.C. Run survived competitive tilts versus the Utah Prospects (69-66) and Las Vegas Prospects (84-74) in quarter and semifinal playoff rounds leading to the ultimate matchup.

As a refresher, teams receive a certain number of points for their success in the respective events, and one ultimate Association winner will be crowned in July at The Finals, to be played in Atlanta.

Overall, the Jayhawk played out more competitively than perhaps I expected. Reports flowed east from Sacramento that Nike's EYBL remains strong, and events in other locales brought in prime talent as well, but having three contenders to be No. 1 in their respective classes (Diamond Stone and Malik Newman from 2015, Josh Jackson from 2016) along with other high-majors added to the tournament's luster.

College coaches seemed to agree, with many big head coaching names gracing the sidelines on Friday and a multitude of assistants tracking prospects for the remainder of the weekend.

I'll have more thoughts and several additional player updates over the next few days.
