Benson draws offers

Class of 2016 center Barret Benson is drawing major interest.

Young center prospects who can play with their back to the basket are tough to find, and one of the better players fitting that description in the class of 2016 is Barret Benson. Running with the Illinois Wolves this spring and summer, Benson is attracting a lot of interest.

"I think I have played pretty well," noted Benson. "I have made progress individually and as a team we have also made progress."

In the neighborhood of 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds already, Benson says that continuing to get bigger and stronger is a major focus for him.

"I am working on developing my body more and also working on my mid-range jump shot," explained Benson.

Recruiting wise Benson is beginning to become a high priority for some of the top teams in the region.

"I have offers from DePaul, Penn State, Indiana, and Loyola with a lot of Big Ten interest as well," noted Benson.

The most recent offer for Benson came from Indiana, and it was a big one for him.

"I was really excited to get an offer from such a great program," said Benson of Indiana. "Obviously they are a powerhouse in basketball and have sent a lot of players to the NBA."

Locally DePaul is working hard to keep some of the Chicago area's best home, and Benson is one of those players.

"Coach (Oliver) Purnell is trying to turn that program around and he is telling me he wants me to be a big part of that," explained Benson.

For now Benson is in no major hurry to select a college, but he does know what will be the single most important factor in his decision when the time comes.

"I would say academics is most important thing and then I will look at the basketball program," said Benson.

Currently Benson is considered the No. 11 center in the class of 2016.
