Maker takes two visits, will take others
Thon Maker, an elite level recruit in the 2016 class, took a trip to the Midwest to take unofficial visits to Kansas and Missouri this week. Maker, who was accompanied by his guardian Ed Smith, visited Kansas on Monday. According to Smith, one of the biggest takeaways from the visit was their meeting with Andrea Hudy. "She had a chance to show us a plan and show us how she gets her guys ready," Smith told Scout.com. "That engaged a lot of our time. Then we got a chance to sit with coach Self and he was showing us the history of Kansas basketball." During the meeting with Self, the Kansas head coach showed Maker how he planned to use him in their offense. "Sitting down with coach Self, he was straight and direct," Smith said. "He said he was going to coach him hard and he was going to coach him fair. He was able to showed us how he moved the Morris twins around with pick and rolls, isolations, mid-post work and off the bounce. There's so much you can do with him." On Tuesday, Maker and Smith traveled to Missouri to meet with their new coach and watch them practice. Smith has a previous relationship with Tim Fuller and that led to the visit. "At Missouri he had a chance to watch them practice also, at least what the NCAA allows them to do," Smith said. "I've known Tim since the Fairfield days when he worked for Ed Cooley," Smith said. "Tim called and said ‘look my man you have to come see us we are building something special and have a good fundamental coach.' I had a chance to see them work their kids out and see his team." Maker's next visit is scheduled for June 30th at Duke. Following that trip, he'll prepare for July events and then start taking more visits in August. "I know we'll probably be visiting Indiana in August," Smith said. "UCLA has offered. They had offered before, but I'm supposed to be out west. When I'm out west at adidas Nations, we'll probably do UCLA at that time." "When we do Indiana, we'll do Kentucky," he added. "When I do UCLA, I'll do Arizona. Those ones that you can drive even thought it's a little bit of drive." Smith said Maker will likely take trips to Georgetown and North Carolina State in the near future. "This is to get him prepared so it's not so overwhelming," Smith said. "He needs to meet these coaches and actually speak to them face to face, rather than on the phone." "This was really for Thon to start getting a feel for the process before it hits him in the face because I know it can be really rigorous," he added. It's no secret that Maker, who is currently a 2016 recruit, is considering reclassifying to the 2015 class. Smith told Scout.com that they would meet with school officials in mid-August to make that decision.
