Wampler Recaps Gopher Visit

Minnesota had a deadly sharp shooter on campus in Eau Claire (WI.) Regis senior small forward Billy Wampler and he talks about how his unofficial visit went inside!

Coming off a NIT championship and a 25 win season, Minnesota and Head Coach Richard Pitino is looking to carry that momentum over to the recruiting trail. Yesterday, the Gophers got one of their targets on campus for an unofficial visit in Eau Claire (WI.) Regis senior small forward Billy Wampler.

"The visit was really good," Wampler told GopherDigest. "We toured the facilities and saw what was to come with the new practice facility. I met with the coaches including Coach Pitino and we talked for awhile. I also watched some of my friends such as Jarvis in the team camp. Overall, it was great and I fell in love with the campus and Williams arena. The coaching staff is really good and fairly young, so I got along really well with them."

The 6-6, 190-pound sharp shooter got some quality time during his time to chat with the head man himself and felt good after the talk.

"Well, I just got to know some of the assistants, while spending the majority of the time with Coach Ben Johnson who does most of the recruiting on me," said Wampler. I also got to sit down with Coach Pitino and discuss the future of the Gophers along with play style and if I could see a fit. He said he really liked the way I play being a bigger guard who can pass, dribble, and shoot. He has only seen me on film, so he'll be out the first open period to watch me front and center. He also said all his assistants loved me and the way I played."

Wampler holds a handful of offers from around the nation, but after this visit to Minneapolis, the Gophers have vaulted near the top and he talks about that along with what a offer from Minnesota would mean to him as well.

"They'll for sure be one of the schools in my final decision," said Wampler. "They are up there. I don't have a clear cut leader, but I'm pretty much a local kid and they are up there."

"It would be huge to land that offer. I really loved the school and it would definitely be a great option because they are very prestigious in my major, which is business."
