Pflueger not far away from decision

Rex Pflueger is working on cutting his list, and from there the 2015 shooting guard shouldn't be too far away from a decision.

After an undefeated junior season at Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei, Rex Pflueger will enter his senior year with a lot more responsibility.

With All-American Stanley Johnson departing, pressure will be on Pflueger, a 6-foot-5, 185-pound 2015 shooting guard, to pick up the slack.

"People have been doubting us about how good we will be without Stanley," Pflueger said. "He was a main part of our program, but hopefully I can take over that leadership role and we can be just as successful.

"I take it on as a challenge. Everything in life is a challenge and this is the one put on me. I had Stanley mentoring me all last year. I learned from him and now I'm ready to step into that role."

It's been a somewhat long recruiting process for Pflueger, who says he hopes to narrow his list down to "five to ten" shortly.

For now, there are six schools working the hardest on him, with a handful of coaches he's built good relationships with.

"Stanford, USC, San Diego State, California, Washington State and Colorado are the schools pushing the hardest for me," Pflueger said.

"Coach David (Velasquez) from San Diego State I've always had a great relationship with, coach (Mike) Schrage from Stanford, Tony Bland at USC, Curtis Allen at Washington State and Rodney Billups from Colorado."

Pflueger is starting to get a better idea of where he might end up going.

"I feel like I'm starting to narrow it down to the schools that are the best for me, that have been the most loyal and where I can see myself," he said.

With Pflueger beginning to narrow his list, he's not too far away from being able to make a decision, but he hopes to see a couple campuses first.

"I think I'll take a couple visits, but not a ton of them," Pflueger said. "I think I'm taking an unofficial visit to San Diego State on Aug. 12, but that's all I know so far.

"I'm still deciding because I'm focused on AAU, but I'm hoping to commit before my senior season."
