One of the best guards in the state is 2017 Gilbert Perry’s Markus Howard and his recruitment already reflects as much.
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound guard played with the 17-year old group in Las Vegas and the majority of kids his age don’t usually do so.
“I know that playing up is going to get me better for the next level,” Howard said. “I just think it will increase the rate of improvement and it has been a lot of fun.”
Howard has been working on improving his game, but also already has his strengths.
“I am trying to work on being more of a vocal leader and leading by example,” he said. “I am a good scorer, but I can also get my teammates involved.”
Schools have noticed Howard’s improvement and the fact that he had a successful summer.
“Arizona State, Arizona, Florida, Kansas, New Mexico, UCLA, and USC are the schools I have heard from,” Howard said. “With each school I am looking at, I want to see if the coach is a player’s coach and has a fast tempo.”
Being from Arizona, Howard has paid attention to the Wildcats and is impressed with numerous aspects of the program.
“I love the coaching staff,” he said. “Arizona also has a great history of guards that come out of the program, so I really like it.”
As of now, Howard does not have any visits planned, but figures that he will take a few during the season.
“I am not sure right now, but I will likely visit the in-state schools at some point this year,” he said. “I am going to take my time and have fun with it.
When I get new offers, I try not to get too excited. I look at it as something I have to keep working hard for and maintain my status.”
