REACTION: Arizona adds scoring with Trier
Sean Miller reeled in another five-star recruit on Sunday. Allonzo Trier, Scout.com’s No. 15 overall player in the 2015 class, committed during an official visit to Arizona. Miller already held pledges from Scout.com’s top rated point guard – Justin Simon – and the No. 3 small forward in the class – Ray Smith. The addition of Trier rounds out their future perimeter attack. Trier complements Simon and Smith particularly well. While Simon and Smith have proved themselves as elite level prospects at their positions, neither are particularly strong long-range shooters. That’s where Trier comes in. A high-level scorer, Trier stands 6-foot-4 and has a powerfully built frame. But don’t let his strong physical features fool you, Trier is quick and can create shot opportunities for himself from three, mid-range and at the rim. Trier shot 40-percent from three at the Nike Peach Jam, while regularly facing double teams and traps from the opposition. While he’s certainly a strong long-range shooter, Trier is quite comfortable from mid-range as well. At the rim, Trier is a strong finisher. He knows how to use his body to shield off defenders and his pure strength allows him to take hits and score through contact with either hand. Trier’s scoring was on full display this summer. During the Nike Peach Jam, Trier averaged 30.8 points a game, including a game high of 42. On the USA Men’s U18 National Team, Trier was third on the team in scoring at 12.6 points a game. He shot 62-percent from the field in five games. Adding Trier to a backcourt of Simon and Smith, gives the Wildcats some serious size and versatility on the perimeter. While Simon is classified as a lead guard, he can certainly slide off the ball at times. Trier is skilled and handles the ball well enough to play on the ball at times as well. Trier's commitment gives Sean Miller his 10th five-star since the 2011 class. Only John Calipari and Kentucky have reeled in more five-star players in the past five classes. In that same span, Miller has added eight four-star prospects as well.
