Moyer talks offer explosion
It has been a busy few weeks for Matthew Moyer’s phone. The Gahanna (Ohio) Lincoln product has been a very popular target for college coaches, and offers have been coming in all over the place for the talented power forward. “I thought the summer went great,” said Moyer. “July went real well for me and was a proving ground for me. I think I proved to myself and a lot of coaches that I am improved as a player.” Recruiting wise following that impressive July, schools such as Florida, Ohio State, Northwestern, Illinois, and Tennessee all offered to go along with previous offers like Xavier, Dayton, Butler, Wisconsin, and Wake Forest. For Moyer this has been a fun time, but not one he is dwelling on. “It has been nice and it is a great feeling,” said Moyer of all the new offers. “Right now I am more focused on getting better, staying the course, and getting ready for the high school season.” The latest offer came from Ohio State. Moyer made the short drive to the OSU campus on August 1, and Thad Matta offered him a scholarship. “Coach Matta just said that I didn’t get an offer from Ohio State, but I earned an offer from Ohio State,” said Moyer. “I have been trying to please my hometown Buckeyes since a young age. He said I earned an offer and that was exciting me for me and my family.” Ohio State might have been his latest offer, but the next one could be from Syracuse. Moyer will make a visit to Syracuse on August 6, and he is expecting the Orange to offer. “I am definitely expecting to get an offer,” said Moyer. “It is going to be a fun experience spending two days with Coach (Jim) Boeheim and those guys. I think Syracuse would be a great fit for me academically and athletically.” Also Moyer says he hopes to make a visit to Florida, and getting that offer was a big deal to him. “That was a huge offer,” explained Moyer. “Billy Donovan is ranked as the No. 1 coach in college basketball, and it is an honor to receive a scholarship from him. It is a situation that I can’t wait to visit and see what the Gators have to offer. I know they have a great fan base and Florida is a primetime school, so I am excited to get down there.” With offers coming in, Moyer has a lot to process in terms of where he will want to attend college. However he says that this will not be an extended process, and he plays to have a decision sometime in the relatively near future. “As far as timetable I am definitely thinking about committing early,” stated Moyer. “I have a lot of great options, and the earlier I commit, the more stress is off my back. I am probably going to commit early. I don’t know if that means a week from now or a year from now I am not sure, but don’t be surprised if I am committed before this high school season.”
