The 6-foot-8, 240-pound center announced his pledge to Ed Cooley and the Friars on his Twitter page Monday afternoon.

Each One Teach One coach Steve Reese confirmed the news to Scout.com.

“I just think it was the perfect fit for him,” Reese said. “Ed Cooley is a really good person on and off the basketball court. Alex just felt really comfortable with the visit and everything went well.”

Providence assistant coach Bob Simon was the lead recruiter in Owens’ recruitment.

“Ed Cooley and coach Simon did a really good job,” he added. “Alex just felt like Cooley was not only a great coach, but also a father figure that can help lead him to be successful.”

Owens is tough and physical inside. His calling card is his ability to rebound the basketball. Owens led his loaded Each One Teach One in rebounding at 7.6 boards a game in the EYBL.

The Friars now have a pair of commitments in the 2015 class. Owens joins wing Ryan Fazekas to make up their current recruiting class.
