NorCal Clash: Midgley Dishes on New Staff

SAN PABLO, Calif. -- Former Cal guard Richard Midgley dishes on the Bears' first 2016 commit Oscar Frayer and the new Cal staff after coaching the 2016 squad in the NorCal Clash.

SAN PABLO, Calif. -- Since last most fans of California basketball saw Richard Midgley, the 6-foot-3 point guard out of Burgess Hill, England, has been busy. After an international career that saw Midgley play in Spain and for several teams in England, Midgley returned to the Golden State, and is now the head coach for Modesto (Calif.) Modesto Christian, where he played for two seasons before earning Pac-10 All-Freshman honors in 2002.

Midgley was the coach for the 2016 side at Sunday’s NorCal Clash at Contra Costa College, and on his roster was a veritable who’s-who of Golden Bears targets: Jordan Ford, Carlos Johnson, Ben Kone, Christian Terrell, Solomon Young and 2016 commit Oscar Frayer.

All but Ford, Johnson and Terrell were not healthy enough to play, but Frayer dutifully sat at the end of the bench, kibitzing with Terrell, clad in a blue and gold walking bear sweatshirt.

“Last summer, Modesto Christian, we played them (Frayer’s Moreau Catholic), and he’s an incredibly athletic kid,” Midgley said. “He’s got the size, the wingspan. He should have a lot of success at Cal. That’s exciting for that staff to get a commit like him so early.”

Midgley is now two staffs removed from his time in Berkeley, but he’s already spoken a bit with the new bunch.

“They’re keeping an eye on one of our juniors -- Christian Ellis -- so I’ve talked to one of their assistants a couple of times, and we’ll probably get Christian up there just to take a look around,” Midgley said.

Ellis was in attendance at the Clash, but was injured and couldn’t compete.

Midgley did offer his take on the new staff at his alma mater, headed by Cuonzo Martin.

“I think they’re great,” he said. “What they’ve done so far, their recruiting, the fact they’re in the running for Ivan [Rabb] at this stage just shows what a great job they’ve done with the short time they’ve been there. I think they’ve done a really good job.”
