Announcement Primer: Jalen Brunson

The decision is in for five-star prospect Jalen Brunson. Here is a look at his recruitment, his talent, and where we think he is headed.

The Recruitment

Jalen Brunson is someone who was very meticulous when it came to his recruitment early on. Sure schools like Purdue and Xavier offered him a scholarship early, but Brunson wasn’t focused at all on that. Under the guidance of his father, and former NBA player, Rick Brunson, Jalen made it clear he was going to take a measured approach to his decision.

Starting at the beginning of his junior year is when Brunson was determined to take a look at things. By this time schools such as Illinois, Temple, Villanova, Michigan, Michigan State, and Kansas were all heavily involved and determined to make Brunson a member of their program.

As the spring and summer got going following his junior season the word became clear that Temple was going to hire Rick Brunson to their staff, and with that it appeared that Jalen would father in his father’s footsteps and attend the school. However that ended up falling apart right before July, and just like that the recruitment was back open.

Eventually Brunson narrowed his list to Temple, Villanova, Purdue, Michigan State, and Illinois, but behind the scenes the chatter focused mostly on Villanova and Illinois. After making official visits to both of those schools Brunson decided he had seen enough and set his decision date.

Brunson allowed both head coaches to meet with him on the eve of his decision and with that some muddled information on where he was leaning was out, but nothing seemed to change in Brunson’s mind.

The Talent

There is no questioning the ability of Brunson to run a team. While he is only about 6-foot-1 and doesn’t possess blazing speed, Brunson knows how to change his pace his well, and is smart enough and strong enough to get by guys off the dribble. Also he is a tremendous passer and has a great feel for the game.

Always during his career Brunson showed himself to be a good floor leader, but over the last year he has also developed into a dynamic shooter. While he isn’t knockdown from deep, Brunson has a very good shooting stroke and is good in the mid-range as well.

With the development of his scoring game, Brunson went from a very good player to a great player and ascended to being one of the top prospects in the entire country, and the top point guard in the class of 2015.

Brian Snow: It has seemed like a close battle for a while between Villanova and Illinois in this one. Ironically even though Brunson is currently living in Chicago, “home” for him is on the east coast, so the Wildcats actually have the home field advantage while the in-state Illini are almost like the road team. While concrete information has been tough to come by, the best indications I have gotten is that he is likely to head back to Philadelphia and play in the Big East. Prediction: VILLANOVA

Evan Daniels: Things seemed to happen quickly following Jalen Brunson's visit to Villanova. He quickly sliced his list two -- 'Nova and Illinois -- and set his decision date. While I think it's close, all the buzz late in this deal surrounds Villanova. Prior to the talk about this dad possibly getting a job at Temple, I thought Brunson was a slight Villanova lean and now I think that's where he is headed. Prediction: VILLANOVA
