And now that the Phoenix have changed conferences, from the Southern to the CAA, getting a quick start in their new league will be key.
While no one should expect a Curry-like career arc for Steven Santa Ana, the three star wing was a strong pickup for Matheny and Elon. The slender shooting guard enjoyed a fine junior season last year, and the shooting guard has proved himself versus North Carolina's top competition at various statewide events.
Santa Ana visited Elon over the weekend and announced his commitment via Twitter:
"Extremely blessed and happy to say I will continue my basketball career at Elon university next year!!"
Santa is a good three-point shooter who's very agile moving around the perimeter, and thus he doesn't have to camp out and set his feet in advance of a kickout pass. He darts into the court's middle areas and shoots with a quick release, which stands to boost him at the next level as well. In addition to Elon, he attracted offers from Lipscomb, Bucknell, American and others.
He has a solid frame and is at least average athletically, so he won't suffer from any severe deficit versus CAA competition. Carrying a solid frame for the long-term as well, he should develop into a multi-year starter for the Phoenix.
