Mathews holds four offers
One of the top guards out west in 2016 is 6-foot-2, 175-pound Jonah Mathews out of Santa Monica (Calif.). A primary ball handler in high school and AAU that is best as a scorer, Mathews has one of the best pull-up jumpers in the class, a shot he can hit from both midrange and three. Mathews has a nice feel for the game, always plays hard has a good frame with the athleticism to defend both guard spots at the next level. Four schools have offered Mathews, with a handful of others showing him interest. "Utah, Arizona State, California and USC have offered," Mathews said. "I'm also being recruited by Colorado, Tulane, Gonzaga and Arizona." Mathews broke down what he likes about the four schools which have offered. California: "I like the coaches and my brother (Jordan Mathews) is there. I went there for the Arizona game last season and it was a great atmosphere." Arizona State: "I haven't been to ASU yet but the coaches tell me it's a great school and they have great coaches as well." Utah: "I like the way they play. I watched them in the Pac-12 Tournament and they like to score." USC: "I took an unofficial visit there and they showed me the football stadium, the academic stuff and the basketball facilities, which I liked a lot. I also like the campus." There's a local school that Mathews paid close attention to growing up. "I grew up a fan of UCLA; my father (Phil Mathews) coached there so I was around the program and liked it a lot," said Jonah. "I like the way they play; they go up and down the court and score." Mathews is more focused on his game than recruiting, but when he does get serious about it, location could play a factor. "I'd rather not go too far because I like Southern California a lot," he said. There's no rush for Mathews to get his recruitment over with. "I'm definitely wide open; I just need to keep working," Mathews said. "I don't think I'll make a decision until my senior year."
