Smits picks Valpo

Derrik Smits has made his decision and he will stay in the state of Indiana.

For Zionsville (Ind.) product Derrik Smits the recruiting process has been long, but on Monday he decided on his future school. The 6-foot-11 Smits came off of an official visit and decided to play in the Horizon League.

"I'm excited to say I've found my future home," Smits announced. "For the next four years I will be attending Valparaiso university."

Also Grassroots Indiana AAU Coach Jim Reamer confirmed the news to Scout.com.

This is a big commitment for the Crusaders as Smits was someone who had high-major interest all throughout the recruiting process. Schools such as Butler, Clemson, and Xavier all showed Smits some attention, and he made several visits to each program.

In the end though, Smits went the mid-major route, and his path led to Valpo. Now he gives the Crusaders a mobile 6-foot-11 center who can really pick and pop. As he continues to get stronger, he could become a better scorer on the low post.

Smits is viewed as a three-star prospect, and is a strong recruiting win for Valpo.
