Swanigan talks visits

Things are beginning to heat up for Caleb Swanigan recruiting wise as his visits are now underway.

Five-star center Caleb Swanigan is now beginning to make his visits. The Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Homestead product is in the first phase of his visit process, and at the same time is getting ready for the season.

As the No. 8 player in the class of 2015 it is no surprise that there is coast to coast interest on the recruiting trail for him. It is also no surprise that he has his goals set high for the high school season.

“Definitely I am working hard to win a state championship this year, and also I have a goal set of winning Mr. Basketball,” said Swanigan.

In the process of getting himself ready for the season, Swanigan is also just beginning to really figure out his college coaches. Swanigan wasn’t very interested in the process earlier in his career, but now he is taking a long and extensive look at his options.

“It has definitely been a new level of focus for me with recruiting,” said Swanigan. “Now that I am making some visits I get to see the campus and know what each staff does on a day to day basis. I meet with everybody, and it helps me to figure out what is best for me.”

Schools such as Indiana, Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Arizona, UCLA, California, Alabama, New Mexico, and Kentucky amongst others have gotten involved in the Swanigan recruitment.

Most recently Swanigan made a visit to Arizona for their Red and Blue Game, and he was very impressed with what he saw.

“I saw their facilities and how they do things out there,” said Swanigan. “It was a real nice campus and everyone around there was real welcoming. I was out there with Justin Simon and Ray Smith and I was talking to them about Arizona and stuff like that.”

He continued, “I feel I would fit in with Arizona’s offense. They like to throw the ball inside, and also Coach (Sean) Miller is a great coach who is building a great roster, and he feels like I could be the missing piece in this recruiting class.”

The weekend prior to visit Arizona, Swanigan took in the sights and sounds at Kentucky. Like with his trip to Arizona, the visit to Kentucky was eye opening.

“It was definitely exciting,” said Swanigan of the UK visit. “It wasn’t the atmosphere like Big Blue Madness or anything, but it definitely showed you what they do on the daily basis with their daily grind and how the players compete during practice. It showed me how it would be as a basketball player at Kentucky.”

He went on about Kentucky, “I feel like I would fit in well. Coach Cal is good at adjusting to the players he has on his roster. He doesn’t have one set way that he does things every year. He goes with the personnel he has on a year to year basis, and uses what he has on his roster well.”

Up next for Swanigan is likely a visit to California to check in with Cuonzo Martin and the Golden Bears.

“Coach Martin has been recruiting me since he was at Tennessee,” said Swanigan. “Now he is out at California and he just wants me to get out there and see the campus and see how he runs practice. He is building a program and they want to get me out to take a look.”

While this is the last planned visit, it is far from the last college that Swanigan will see.

“I think I will make more visits during basketball season, but I am saving the ones that are closer for during the season since I can drive there and not miss a game or a day or school,” he explained. “I think I will make a few more visits then, but nothing has been set up yet.”

Also Swanigan reiterated his desire to wait until the spring to decide and that is not close to a final decision.
