Sampson sorting through visits, decision
Four-star scoring guard Brandon Sampson is in the middle of his official visit tour. The Baton Rogue (La) Madison Prep standout is looking at schools all over the country, and now he is finishing up his visits. According to Madison Prep Head Coach Jeff Jones, things are going well as the 6-foot-5 Sampson prepares for his senior season. “We are just working on him finishing and trying to improve his leadership,” said Jones. “We have a young club this year, and he is one of just two seniors, so he is going to have to step up, so it is big for him this year to help us finish and win a championship.” While he is working hard to have a big senior season, Sampson is also turning an eye toward recruiting. He has already made visits to LSU, California, and St. John’s with a visit to USC coming up this weekend. The most recent trip for Sampson was to St. John’s, and according to Jones it went well. “He enjoyed his trip to St. John’s,” said Jones. “He got to see Madison Square Garden and he watched them scrimmage when he was there and see the team and meet the coaches. New York City is New York City, and what is there not to like about that, so he definitely liked the city.” Jones continued, “Also Brandon liked the situation that he likely could come in and play right away and make an impact as a freshman if he were to go there.” Up next is the weekend trip to USC, and according to Jones, Sampson is looking forward to seeing what the Trojans have to offer. “USC has some playing time for him, and Los Angeles is a big city, so that is a good thing,” explained Jones. “Also he is looking hard at playing in the Pac 12 conference. He is very intrigued by Coach (Andy) Enfield’s system since he gets up and down the court and plays fast, so that is what Brandon will be looking for.” To this point Jones has maintained that Sampson would make a spring decision. That was the same as what Jones felt would happen with his last star, Jarell Martin, however Martin ended up signing early. Now Jones won’t rule that out for Sampson as well. “I think it could be an early decision or it could be a spring decision,” said Jones. “I’d have to say as of now I couldn’t tell you. I didn’t see it happening with Jarell switching to the early signing period and history could repeat itself, or Brandon could decide to wait until the spring.” Sampson is considered the No. 59 player in the class of 2015.
