Childs holds three offers

Yoeli Childs holds three early scholarship offers. What's the latest on the 2016 Utah post?

An emerging 2016 post from South Jordan (Utah) Bingham has seen his recruitment pick up in recent weeks.

Yoeli Childs, a 6-foot-7, 210-pound big man with soft hands, good feet and a running motor has continued to progress, according to his coach with the Utah Prospects AAU program, Tim Davis.

“Yoeli is a throwback guy,” Davis said. “He’s a banger with skill under the basket. He has a really good body but also really good skill. He has a great right hook and has gotten much better with his left hook. He just moves so well for his size.

“He’s 6-foot-7 but plays bigger because he has almost a 7-foot wingspan. He’s shed some weight and gotten a lot bouncier since the summer. He gets off his feet quickly and has very good footwork.

“He’s focusing on his post moves and his handle a little bit. He’s just a throwback guy and his bread and butter is his game in the paint. No matter how big an opposing center is, they’re going to have a tough time guarding him because his body, feet and how good his footwork is.”

Right now three schools have offered Childs scholarships, with several others monitoring him.

Arizona State, Utah State and Idaho State have offered,” Davis said. “Utah, Stanford, Cal, Oregon and Oregon State are recruiting him.”

Childs has already seen one of the programs which has offered, while he hopes to check out a couple other Pac-12 schools soon.

“He likes Arizona State a lot; he went on a visit there and liked it,” said Davis. “He really likes that staff quite a bit. Stanford is also a very good place because he’s such a smart kid. He’ll probably visit Stanford and Cal.”

Davis said that Childs will likely make a college decision at the end of the summer.

“Yoeli is looking for a high academic school, somewhere he can play the three, four and five,” he said. “He wants to go somewhere that plays their bigs inside but also lets them step out.”
