Chick-Fil-A Classic Preview

The annual Chick-Fil-A Classic always boasts a talented field of largely regional talent, and this year the event is more loaded than usual thanks to the plethora of stars hailing from within South Carolina. With some national opposition also on hand, the weekend is shaping up to be splendid.

When: Dec. 19-20,22-23

Reporting Staff: Rob Harrington

Top Teams: Jacksonville (Fla.) Arlington Country Day, Centereach (N.Y.) Our Savior, Virginia Beach (Va.) Cape Henry, Kinston (N.C.) High, Rockville (Md.) Montrose Christian, Fayetteville (N.C.) Trinity Christian, West Chester (Pa.) Westtown, Columbia (S.C.) Hammond, Columbia (S.C.) Dreher, Columbia (S.C.) Spring Valley, Mullins (S.C.) High.

Top Players: Cheick Diallo, Damon Wilson, Dennis Smith, Brandon Ingram (pictured above), P.J. Dozier, Tevin Mack, Seventh Woods, Chris Clarke, Mario Kegler, Tookie Brown, Jordan Bruner, Jalek Felton, Mohamed Bamba.

Looking Forward To: As you can see, Chick-Fil-A will feature a tremendous crop of players and teams. And this is no massive field, either; almost every game will send a high-major prospect onto the floor. By the end of the proceedings, fans and coaches in attendance no doubt will be treated to some high-level hoops.

I’m particularly interested in watching a potential Dennis Smith vs. Seventh Wood rematch. The junior point guards squared off last December at the HSOT Invitational, and there’s a chance they could wage battle in Columbia as well. Watching an elite such as Cheick Diallo always carries its benefits, too, and I’m highly intrigued by emerging sophomore big man Mohamed Bamba.

I’ll attend Saturday and Monday, two full days of what should be excellent action.
