Sooner Than Later

The Oklahoma Sooners, as expected, landed a commitment from Midwest City swingman DeAngelo Alexander. He was long thought to be a Sooner lock; even before his high school coach joined the OU staff this month.

Alexander Picks OU

Really, there was never much doubt. Oklahoma figured to be tough to beat in the race to land Midwest City SF/SG DeAngelo Alexander. One of the nation's best swingmen, Alexander wasn't a priority for anyone else because most just knew the time would come when he would be a Sooner so few actually spent much time recruiting him.

In Alexander, Oklahoma gets a strong yet very athletic kid. He has very good leadership skills, an engaging personality and really likes to rebound. Last year in helping Midwest City to the state title, he averaged 19 points and 7 rebounds.

The hope for Sooner fans is that Alexander will be enough of a presence to convince Athletes First teammates Shelden Williams and Kevin Bookout to follow him. Bookout has strong family ties to Oklahoma and really the only way we can see him conceivably leaving the state would be to pursue track and field opportunities at a major powerhouse track school.

Meanwhile, the Sooners faithful are quietly sending out feelers that say they are very much alive in the race to land Williams. Once thought to be dead in the water, the buzz now is that OU has a chance. Terry Evans, OU's new assistant, is a former Sooner and was the high school coach for both Alexander and Williams while coaching Bookout in AAU ball.
