Spellman going through process

Omari Spellman is having a huge junior season, and continues to take a long look at his recruitment.

Five-star class of 2016 center Omari Spellman continues to go through the recruiting process. Now at Granby (Mass.) MacDuffie School, Spellman continues to work on all aspects of his game while taking a long look at a large group of schools.

“Our team is starting to click and it is amazing feeling to be a part of,” said Spellman of the season. “I am just so happy to come back where I am from and our guys could come together as a team and play on a big stage.”

Over the weekend Spellman was able to return home to the state of Ohio and play in front of a large contingent of family and friends. While that was nice, Spellman has no doubt that he made the right move to get away from home and go to MacDuffie.

“I miss my family a lot, but I am getting better every day and it was the right decision for me,” said Spellman.

Recruiting wise Spellman currently is considering 15 schools. The list consists of Kentucky, Villanova, Ohio State, UCLA, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Miami, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Wake Forest, St. John's and Seton Hall.

“I am considering 15 schools now and that is pretty much where it stands right now,” said Spellman.

Of that list, Spellman says he has made visits this year to Ohio State, Villanova, and Pittsburgh.

Ohio State Head Coach Thad Matta watched Spellman play over the weekend, and Spellman was impressed with Matta when he saw Ohio State practice.

“I saw them practice, and their practice is intense,” explained Spellman. “Coach Matta is a really good teaching coach. I saw them go at it in practice and get better. Coach Matta just teaches them and they get better every day, so that would be really good for me.”

Also watching Spellman this weekend was an assistant from Pittsburgh, Brandin Knight. Spellman says he and Knight have built a strong bond.

“Brandin Knight is my guy,” noted Spellman. “We have a really good relationship, and their campus is beautiful. They got a big win against Florida Gulf Coast when I was there, and it was a really good visit.”

In terms of the other school he has visited, Villanova, Spellman said, “Villanova was an amazing experience. We went to their midnight madness and it was so much fun. Jay Wright is a great guy and they really have a family atmosphere down there and have a great team.”

For now Spellman is in no hurry to make a decision, but he does say he has a good idea of what he is looking for in a future home.

“I am looking for a place where I have an emotional connection with the coach,” said Spellman. “This is going to be one of the last times where I get to choose who I play for. So I want a coach that I have a great connection with, and a school that has a family atmosphere.”
