Spellman makes verbal pledge

Villanova picked up their first commitment of the 2016 class on Friday and it was a big one. Omari Spellman made the call over a host of high major schools.

Five-star junior center Omari Spellman made a surprise college announcement on Friday.

Spellman, who stands 6-foot-8 and checks in at 250-pounds, committed to Jay Wright and Villanova over significant interest from the likes of Kentucky, Ohio State, UCLA, Connecticut, Pittsburgh, Arizona, Miami, West Virginia, Virginia, Florida, Indiana, Wake Forest, St. John's and Seton Hall.

Spellman tweeted the news.

"To honor my mother's birthday and our bond I would like to announce my commitment to Villanova University," Spellman said in his tweet.

A talented post prospect, Spellman impresses with his versatility on the offensive end. With his size, he's able to carve out space on the block and has tremendous scoring touch around the rim. Spellman is also a good shooter and can step out of the paint and make jumpers out to 22-feet.

Spellman is ranked No. 19 overall and as the No. 4 center in the 2016 recruiting class. Spellman ranked No. 61 overall in Scout's Ultimate 100, which ranks the top players regardless of class.

Spellman is Villanova's first verbal commitment of the 2016 class.
