2016 PF Baker shines at Elite Preview

Robert Baker, a 6-foot-8 power forward, was one of the top performers at the Elite Preview. Scout caught up with him about his game and recruiting interest.

One of the more intriguing long-term prospects at Hoop Seen’s Elite Preview this past weekend was Marietta (Ga.) The Walker School standout Robert Baker.

At 6-foot-8, Baker has a long set of arms, fluidly moves on the floor like a guard and is a solid athlete. At the event, Baker made a number of mid-range jump shots and it’s a shot he considers his strength.

“Post moves, catch and shoot and I’m a real good pick and pop guy,” Baker said when asked to describe what he’s doing on the court when he’s at his best. “That’s my bread and butter.”

Baker averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks during his junior season. He said the next step in his basketball development is getting stronger.

Baker told Scout he’s picked up scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, Rice, Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, George Mason, Richmond, Davidson and UAB. Baker, who has a 3.5 GPA, also has interest from Princeton, Harvard and Stanford.

“I went to Harvard a couple of weekends ago,” he said when asked about visits. “I’ve been to Vanderbilt three or four times. I go to [Georgia] Tech on a Saturday to see games and I’ve been to Georgia and Tennessee.”

Do any of the schools stick out to Baker?

“The Ivy League [schools],” he responded.

Baker said his trip to Harvard went well and loves the long-term aspect of an Ivy League education.

“Just the whole going to Harvard and having those connections after basketball,” he said when asked about Harvard.

“The facilities weren’t that great,” he added. “But I loved the Boston feel to it. Most people don’t like it, but I like it like that.”

Baker said Vanderbilt was the second SEC school to recruit him and he loved the atmosphere at their games.

“Just the whole Memorial magic and the feeling in that arena,” he said. “That’s something special. It really is.”

Despite the early offers, interest and college visits, Baker was admant that his recruitment is still in the beginning stages.

“I’m still open to everybody.”
