Valpo Goes After Oppland Twins

A few years ago, Homer Drew turned Valparaiso basketball into a family affair with the help of his son. In the coming years, he'll be looking to do the same but the theme will be different. Over the weekend, a pair of fraternal twins committed to Valparaiso.

Drew Takes Two

Over the weekend, Valparaiso hosted the Oppland Brothers – Dan and Mike – on their official visits. By the time the trips were over, Valparaiso had its first two commitments of the year.

"[Valparaiso] was always our No. 1 choice and we went on the official visit this weekend and we couldn't be around a better guy than Homer Drew"," Mike Oppland said. "The players were real cool."

According to Mike, the 6-7, 195 pound swingman, the brothers had planned on taking official visits to Southwest Missouri State, Davidson, Lehigh and Ohio. They wished to go to school together and needed to find a program with room for the both of them, not exactly easy with the "5/8 Rule" looming.

"We weren't expecting to go down there this weekend and make a decision but we decided there wasn't a reason to wait," Mike Oppland said. "I'm going to be more of a perimeter guy and Dan's [6-8,225] is going to be more a three-four."

The fraternal twins accounted for 40 points a game last year at St. Louis Whitfield with Mike getting 18 a night and Dan, generally considered the better college prospect of the two, collecting 22.
