Open Period Preview: Xavier
There is still work to be done for coaches in the 2015 recruiting class, but for this weekend the focus really shifts to 2016, and getting out and seeing the top prospects all over the country. Here is a look at where the Xavier coaches will be, and who they are likely to see. There is no doubt that the Xavier staff will have a large presence this weekend in Hampton, Virginia at the Nike EYBL event. Many of the Musketeers top targets will be present, and with that one would naturally expect one or at times two coaches to be there. In need of a point guard in the class of 2016, Xavier will surely be tracking the every move of two of their top targets at the position. Running with King James is four-star floor general Xavier Simpson while three-star recent offer C.J. Walker will be with Spiece Indy Heat. Aside from those guys, in-state prospects playing from All-Ohio are sure to get a close look. Wing Ibi Watson as well as shooting guard Frankie Hughes will both be in the cross hairs of the Xavier staff. Neither has an offer yet, though both are firmly on the radar. Also the Musketeers will be watching several out of state prospects at the event. Maybe their top priority on the wing right now is St. Louis Eagles Xavier Sneed. Sneed is a super athletic prospect that the Musketeers have targeted. Even with the departure of assistant Rick Carter, expect Xavier to stay involved with players in New England such as BABC shooting guard Bruce Brown and power forward Terrell Brown. Also Expressions Elite power forward Tyrique Jones should continue to be a top priority, and all will be in Hampton. Xavier is also sure to have a presence down in New Orleans for the Under Armour event. That is where arguably their top overall target will be playing in Markelle Fultz. Fultz has been on the radar for a while, has been to Xavier’s campus, and the fast rising wing has the Musketeers high on his list for now. Look for Xavier to trail Fultz everywhere he goes this weekend. Fultz is far from the only top target though as Indiana natives Joey Brunk and Kris Wilkes will be in attendance in New Orleans as well. Brunk is the Musketeers top target on the low post in 2016 while Wilkes might be their top overall target in the 2017 class. Also look for Xavier to track class of 2017 forward Melo Eggleston of DC Premier, 2016 wing Damien Jefferson from the SYF Players, and DC Premier point guard Alani Moore. At the adidas Gauntlet event in Dallas many of Xavier’s other top prospects will be in attendance. The Ohio Basketball Club will feature two of Xavier’s 2016 targets in center Micah Potter as well as small forward Jarron Cumberland. Potter doesn’t yet have an offer, but Cumberland does and has been on the radar for a little while. Also two prospects from Kentucky and two from Indiana will definitely be in the mix for Xavier. Class of 2017 Indiana Elite forward Jaren Jackson has to be a frequent visitor to Xavier already, and then also class of 2016 shooting guard Eron Gordon will also be in action for the Eric Gordon All-Stars. From the state of Kentucky, power forward Aaric Holman and wing Eli Wright will be running with Hoop Dreams. Both of them are definitely on the Xavier radar and will have the attention of the coaching staff.
