Brunk is high on the Spartans
Four-star class of 2016 center Joey Brunk had a very strong start to his spring at the Under Armour Association event in New Orleans. The 6-foot-9 Brunk has been a major focus for Tom Izzo and Michigan State for a long time. The Indy Hoosiers and Brunk had a bit of an up and down weekend as a whole, but he feels that they got adjusted and will step up their game as the spring goes along. “I think it was a good weekend for all of us,” said Brunk. “We adjusted to the speed and athleticism of the game as the weekend went on. It was definitely a change of pace from high school, but it was a good weekend.” During the event Brunk averaged 18.2 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, and he feels it was some hard work paying off. “I’ve definitely been working in the weight room to get stronger,” said Brunk. “Also I have come in before and after school to work on being more efficient with my back to the basket and also hitting the 15 to 17 foot jumper.” Recruiting wise Brunk has scholarship offers from Buter, Xavier, Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Stanford, and others. In terms of where things stand in the process, Brunk said, “We are at the point now where I want to get some official visits locked down, so I know when those are going to happen. I wanted to wait until after the high school season. I was just focused on winning, and wasn’t really worried about recruiting.” Michigan State has long been a program seen as one of the favorites for Brunk, and Izzo as well as his assistants made sure to track Brunk all weekend in New Orleans. “I love Coach Izzo’s passion for the game, and traditionally they always pound the ball inside,” said Brunk of the Spartans. “They just got a big commitment from Caleb Swanigan a few days ago, so they are definitely a great program.” Currently Brunk is viewed as the No. 17 center and the No. 78 player overall.
