Pope gets first pledge as head coach

Mark Pope picked up his first pledge as a head coach on Monday.

Mark Pope has his first commitment as a head coach. Telly Davenport, of Idaha Falls (Id.) Bonneville, committed to the Utah Valley University coach Monday morning.

"Coach Pope called me a day and half after he got the job," Davenport said. "He was so ecstatic about everything. He was so hyped. I just kept talking to him. He called me every day or once or twice a day for two weeks."

Davenport took a visit to Portland and for a while thought that was where he would end up. But Pope convinced him to take a visit and the trip won him over.

"He convinced me to go on a visit and I went on the visit to see how it was," he said. "I didn't have my mind set, but I thought I would end up at portland."

"After being there and being around coach and building a relationship with him, I just thought my relationship with him was so strong," Davenport added. "I thought that relationship with the head coach would benefit me in college."

Davenport said he also considered Steston, UNC-Asheville and others.
