Newman commits to Mississippi State

After an outstanding high school career, Malik Newman has settled on his college destination. The Mississippi native committed Mississippi State.

Ben Howland didn't waste any time reeling in one of the best prospects in the nation.

The new Mississippi State coached tapped into his new backyard for Malik Newman, a standout at Jackson (Miss.) Callaway, on Friday. Newman announced for the Bulldogs at a press conference in his hometown.

Newman picked Howland and MSU over Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi and North Carolina State.

A 6-foot-3 guard, Newman is regarded as the No. 8 prospect in the 2015 recruiting class. Newman was selected as a McDonald’s and Jordan Brand All-American, plus was selected to compete with the USA Team at the Nike Hoop Summit.

Newman has had a decorated high school career that has been full of winning. Newman led Callaway to four consecutive 5A state championships. He also took home MVP honors and Gold Medals at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.

During his senior season, Newman averaged 29.8 points a game.

Newman joins a Mississippi State recruiting class that also includes top 100 recruit Quinndary Weatherspoon, who Newman played AAU ball with on the Jackson Tigers.
