Williams is making his own name
For Peoria (Ill.) Manual standout DaMonte Williams, he has always been in the spotlight. The son of local legend and former Illinois great Frank Williams, DaMonte has had high expectations on him, and now he is more than making a name for himself. At around 6-foot-2 with big time athleticism, a good feel for the game, and an excellent mid-range jump shot, Williams is one of the toughest guards in the 2017 class to really contain. He led the Mac Irvin Fire to a solid showing at the Spiece Run N Slam, and overall he has been happy with his play this spring. “I think we are playing well as a team,” said Williams. “We are just trying to get up and down the court and use our athleticism and just have some fun and win games.” He continued, “I have been working on my defense mostly. I want to do a better job of not getting screened, and also just be better on the ball.” When it comes to his recruitment, things are just now picking up for Williams. “South Carolina, Illinois, Kansas, UIC, and there are others, but I am not sure who all is recruiting me,” he explained. Following the April evaluation period Illinois stepped forward with an offer to Williams, and while Williams says he isn’t super familiar with the school and how they play, it was an honor to get the offer. “It meant a lot to get that offer, especially with my dad playing there,” said Williams. “I like school there and it was great to get that offer.” When it comes to Kansas, who is yet to offer, Williams said, “I know Coach (Jerrance) Howard is from Peoria, so that is good. Also they have a real good program, but I want to learn more about them.” For now Williams is focused on getting better, and for him that means being a better leader from the point guard spot. “I am working on being a leader and talking more on the court,” said Williams. “I know I need to do a better job of that.”
