Payton beginning to emerge

One of the nice surprises out of Illinois this spring has been the emergence of Charles Payton.

The talent in the state of Illinois in the class of 2017 is impressive, and one of the players to really emerge is Charles Payton. Running with the Illinois Wolves, Payton has emerged in a big way this spring, and now he is someone high-majors are taking a very close look at.

“I’ve been playing pretty well,” said Payton of the spring. “My team has been playing strong as well. Overall it has been a good spring, and things are definitely going well individually and as a team.”

At around 6-foot-5 with very long arms, Payton plays the center spot on his high school team. He is working to transition to more of a wing role, and that means improving his skill level every day.

“It has been rough at times, but I get into the gym every day,” said Payton. “I work on my ball handling and my shooting, so it is coming along for me.”

Recruiting wise Payton has seen his stock soar in recent weeks.

“UIC, Butler, Indiana, Illinois State, Illinois, Purdue, Kansas State, and a few other schools have been calling,” noted Payton. “It has been a lot.”

About the recent rush of interest, Payton said, “It has been surprising. I didn’t expect everything to come this fast, but it has been good.”

When it comes to Illinois, Payton is intrigued by the program.

“I don’t know too much about the coaches, but I know they have a good program, and it is close to home, so I am interested in learning more about them,” noted Payton.

A school Payton hopes to visit is Indiana, and he likes what he has seen so far from the Hoosiers.

“I just know that the program has a great tradition,” said Payton. “Also they have a good roster and it is a team that plays a fun style of basketball.”

For now Payton is taking in all the recruiting interest while being focused on getting better on the court.
