Recruiting wise Gilbert is down to Connecticut, Illinois, Syracuse, Louisville, and Texas. Recently Gilbert made an official visit to Connecticut, and the trip went very well. “It was my first time being on a college campus so I enjoyed it,” said Gilbert of UConn. “I took it all in and I learned some things about life, and just had a lot of fun.” When it comes to Louisville, Gilbert said, “I like a lot about Louisville. I like Coach (Rick) Pitino, and I plan to make a visit soon. They have a real nice program.” One school that has been recruiting Gilbert very hard is Illinois, and he likes the program quite a bit. “They talk to me a lot,” said Gilbert of Illinois. “They are just building a relationship with me. I just feel like they are only missing a point guard. They are a piece guard away from being a special team, and I feel like I can be that piece.” About Syracuse, Gilbert said, “I grew up a Syracuse fan so Syracuse is like a dream school. It is surprising that they are recruiting me. I love their system, Coach (Jim) Boeheim, and the entire coaching staff.” Shaka Smart has hit the ground running on the recruiting trail at Texas, and he has made Gilbert a major priority. “I have known Coach Smart and his style of play from watching VCU,” explained Gilbert of Texas. “I like that style of play and how they are aggressive on the court.” With one visit already in the books, Gilbert says to expect more trips before he makes a final decision. “I plan to set up a few visits in June maybe and then maybe August,” said Gilbert. “I am just taking my time, but I know for sure I will be making a couple more visits.”
Gilbert talks final five
One of the top point guards in the 2016 class is Alterique Gilbert. All spring Gilbert has been running with CP3 on the AAU circuit, and his play has been superb. Now he is considering five schools, and has already made one official visit. About his spring play, Gilbert said, “It is going well. We are playing really well as a team. I think I am playing well. I have focused on helping my teammates make plays and making everyone else better.” He continued, “I have been working on more of a vocal leader on the floor.”
