When it comes to his recruitment, Washington said, “Since the spring I have been hearing a lot from VCU, Xavier, Butler, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Texas Tech, George Washington, and some other schools.” He continued, “I am not sure when, but I know I want to visit Wake Forest, Xavier, and Butler.” Wake Forest under Danny Manning has put in a lot of effort to recruit Washington, and he likes the potential fit there. “They are very interested in me,” said Washington of Wake Forest. “They have been recruiting me as hard as anyone. They do some things differently, for example they talked to my parents before they even came to me. I think the style of offense fits me well with a lot of ball screens, and of course playing in the ACC is good.” Xavier is also a school that has picked up the interest lately, and he feels like he could play a big role right away for the Musketeers. “I know that I would be their focal point at the point guard,” said Washington of Xavier. “They graduate some guys on the perimeter and they are looking to add a point guard with some new big men as well. It is also a good program with a good tradition.” About Butler, Washington said, “I have talked to their coaching staff and they give their guards a lot of freedom to make plays. They use ball screens and also they have great academics.” At this point there is no specific timeframe for Washington to make a decision, but he does know what he will be looking for in a school. “I am just looking for somewhere that I am comfortable,” stated Washington. “Also I want to go to a place where I feel like I am needed, and not just a place that wants me. Also I am looking for a place where I will have the chance to play right away.”
New schools are involved with Washington
Playing a combo guard role this spring with the Albany City Rocks in the Nike EYBL, Howard Washington has put up some very solid numbers and shown impressive shooting and passing ability. Now the 6-foot-2 Washington is also taking a close look at his recruitment with new schools getting involved. “I have been working on my defense and on mental toughness,” said Washington. “I can’t get down when we are behind, and have to stay focused on the next play and the next game, and not allow something bad to affect me.”
